Why fusion mechanics changed how I play tower defence
Classic tower defence is about position and upgrade choices. Fusion — where matching towers merge into stronger units — adds a whole new layer on top, and after a stretch with Skybreak Defenders I can't go back to games without it.
The mental shift is that placement is no longer permanent commitment. You're setting up a recipe. Put two of the same type together with a third nearby, and you get something greater than the parts, so your early towers are ingredients, not final answers.
This changes the whole opening. Instead of building the strongest single tower you can afford, you build toward a combo two waves out. It rewards planning and punishes panic-spending, which is my favourite kind of tension.
If you're trying a fusion-based game for the first time, resist the urge to fuse immediately. Sometimes holding your towers unmerged for one extra wave lets you build a better final unit. Patience is a real strategy here.
