Emberbound Tales

★★★★☆ 4.4 Editor rating

Emberbound Tales leans into character over spectacle. You gather a party of four, each with distinct roles, and work through a story that trusts you to remember names and grudges. The writing is warmer and funnier than I expected from a mobile RPG.

Combat is turn-based with a positioning twist — where you stand on the grid changes what your skills do. It's simple to grasp and slowly opens into real depth. I found myself planning two turns ahead by the mid-game, which is exactly what I want from the genre.

The grind picks up in the last third, and a couple of boss fights lean on trial and error. Manage your expectations there and you'll get a genuinely satisfying twenty-hour adventure that saves and resumes cleanly, which matters on a phone.
